Course Description

Endodontic therapy depends on diagnostic radiographs and image-guided treatment. Periapical and panoramic radiography have been augmented by the recent introduction of high-resolution CBCT, allowing three-dimensional assessment of odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions, canal morphology, root and alveolar fractures, resorptive lesions and anatomy prior to surgery. This course will highlight the advantages of CBCT imaging in light of recent research demonstrating a significant increase in lesion visualization when compared to periapical radiographs. Particular emphasis will be placed on interpretation and documentation skills along with explaining a systematic approach to radiographic assessments.

Educational objectives:

  1. Describe the endodontic applications To Be Announced Soon (In-Person)*of CBCT.
  2. Describe limited field high-resolution CBCT imaging and how it differs from standard dental CBCTs and medical CTs.
  3. Understand how volumetric analysis improves detection of endodontic and non-endodontic pathosis.
  4. Learn how to select cases for limited field CBCT assessments.
  5. Describe the four radiographic features common to lesions of endodontic origin.
  6. Understand how CBCT radiation exposure compares to periapical, panoramic and medical CTs.

Please join us for this two-day course. We will explore the benefits of adding CBCT to an endodontic office setting, including, training, implementation, consent process, radiologist overreads, and marketing.

Established and new practices can benefit. Position yourself for the future with this highly practical and motivating seminar.

What is CBCT and How Does it Work?

  • Principles of CBCT
  • Comparison of panoramic, CBCT and medical CT imaging
  • Advantages of limited field CBCT
  • Dosimetry of CBCT -biologic effects of radiation dose relevant to endodontic CBCT assessments. Absorbed, equivalent and effective dose and their units; comparative does for 2D and 3D imaging.
  • Orthogonal planes
  • Field of view (FOV)
  • Principles of CBCT image production -resolution, windowing, levels

Interpretation of CBCT Volumes

  • Systematic interpretation of CBCT scans
  • How a radiologist analyzes CBCT volumes
  • Common interpretation errors and artifacts
  • Understanding medical history and chief complaint: CBCT
  • Assessment of artifacts
  • Reporting on cross-sectional images, methods and conventions
  • How and when to have a volume over-read by a radiologist

Evidence-Based Endodontic Applications

  • Clinical decision making
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Acute and chronic periradicular abscesses
  • Revision therapy
  • Root fracture
  • Resorptive lesions (internal, external and cervical)
  • Intra-operative uses
  • Occult findings

The Paranasal Sinuses: Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology, Significance for Endodontists

  • Sinus anatomy and physiology
  • Focus on maxillary sinus pathology and radiographic findings
  • MSEO: Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Etiology
  • When to refer patients for ENT evaluation

Legal Issues, Referrals and Consent Process

  • Legal aspects of CBCT involving acquisition, interpretation and a discussion of stakeholder responsibilities along with risk estimates pertaining to radiation dose associated with this technology.
  • Understand the elements of the written referral process and disclaimer
  • Patient “Record of Discussion and Consent Form” and “Record of Discussion and Informed Refusal.”

Marketing Strategies

  • Cost effective tools for practice building using CBCT: lunches, lunch groups, office receptions, newsletters, broadcast emails, educational meetings for referring doctors, study club meetings and the Internet.
  • New concepts for promoting your practice, including: publicity, public relations and branding.
  • Creating a Web site that communicates your vision of creating a patient-centered experience.
  • Patient education materials

Office Design

  • A virtual tour of our office with a review of office construction details, materials, design concepts and installation of the CBCT unit. This part of the seminar is a must if you are considering adding a CBCT unit, remodeling or constructing a new office.
